What is Gas Tank

A gas tank, also known as a fuel tank, is a container used for storing and transporting gases or liquid fuels. In common usage, the term “gas tank” often refers specifically to the tank used in vehicles to store gasoline (petrol), diesel, or other liquid fuels. However, it can also refer to tanks used for storing compressed gases such as natural gas, propane, or other industrial gases.

How does a Gas Tank work?

  1. Compressed gas tanks: used to store compressed gas, such as compressed air, natural gas, etc. The working principle is based on Boyle’s law, that is, at a certain temperature, the pressure of a gas is inversely proportional to its volume. The gas is compressed into the tank, which increases the pressure of the gas by reducing its volume.
  2. Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanks: used to store liquefied petroleum gas, which is usually liquefied at low temperature or high pressure. The working principle may involve liquefying and storing the gas at high pressure, or liquefying the gas by refrigeration at low temperature.
  3. Natural gas tanks: used to store natural gas, which can be compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied natural gas (LNG). CNG tanks store gas by compressing it at high pressure, while LNG tanks store liquid natural gas at very low temperatures.
  4. Industrial gas tanks: used to store various gases for industrial use, such as oxygen, nitrogen, argon, etc. These tanks may be designed to store gas at high pressure for easy transportation and use.
  5. Fuel cell gas supply system tanks: used to store compressed hydrogen for use in fuel cells. The working principle is to compress hydrogen gas under high pressure so that it can provide sufficient pressure when used in fuel cells.
  6. Breathing air tank: used to store breathing air for diving or emergency situations. The working principle is to compress the air to a high pressure state for storage, and gradually release the gas to normal breathing pressure through a pressure reducing valve when in use.
